Building "off-grid"

- Balcony Bracing -

June 2009:  I'm getting a little more ambitious these days, and have stopped going to the formal rehab appointments.  I'm still doing the rehab stuff, and starting to add in some "real" workout exercises, too.  I'm still taking it kind of easy...there's no rush, after all, but there's still work to do on the house, so I'm trying to keep that steady.  This next project is one that's been bugging me for some time.  The balconies where kind of "bouncy", which had to do with a couple factors.  One is that the fly rafters never had much bracing, and they're a major part of the balcony support.  The other reason is that the balconies hang out too far from the fly rafters, which is simply an experiment that didn't work the way I had hoped.

I once again used the jack posts to preess the fly rafters outward from the balconies. Then I bolted in pieces of the large cross beams that once spanned the center of the house.  This stiffened the fly rafters some, and took out some of the "bounce", but I'm still going to have to do something more to support the outer edge of the balconies.  For now this bracing project will keep the fly rafters from sagging.
