Battery Bank

The heart of every off-grid system

This isn't a picture of my battery bank, but it'll do for the illustration.  The idea is to run your house off battery power when the wind and sun aren't generating electricity for you.  That requires a little life-simplification, but that might be a good thing for the world anyway.  There are high-output items you "can't" effectively use in an off-grid system, like standard air conditioners, washing machines, etc., so you have to compromise in some areas or switch to specialty appliances.  I've simplified my living greatly, so I'm designing my battery bank on the small size to start, maybe (8) 6-volt golf-cart batteries hooked up in a simple 12 volt system.  I'll add batteries down the road if the system isn't giving me enough stored power.

Cost:  I've read from many that this will be the most expensive part of the system, but I've found otherwise.  Like anything else, you can spend as much as you like on super premium, low-maintenance gel batteries, but I don't think that's necessary.  Sam's Club and other discount outlets sell 6-volt golf cart batteries for under $50 each.  When I get my battery bank set up, I'll update this page to include all involved costs...including the effectiveness of each stage and any setup hassles.
