Wood Heat

Wood heat is a mainstay of off-grid living.  It's always been one of my favorites on the list of off-grid ideas.  I love the 'cabin feel' a woodburning stove gives a place.

This is a mid-70's model "Earth Stove" that we had in our home growing up. That house was condemned after the Grand Forks flooding of 1997 (long after us kids were grown and moved away).  I loved that stove, so a buddy and I pulled it out before the city came to demolish the house.  Later we cleaned it up as best we could, then installed it at another buddy's lake cabin (pictured here).  The ceramic tile behind the stove is protecting the wall from the heat.  Years later a guy at work mentioned that his parents wanted to sell their old woodburning stove because they were converting to a pellet stove.  It was identical to the stove in the picture, so I bought it on the spot knowing that I'd use it in my own home someday.  That day is coming soon.

Cost:  The stove pictured was free, less traveling expenses, and maybe $50 for materials to build the hearth setup  The stove I bought from the guy at work was $100, without stovepipe.  I'll include all involved costs once I have it set up and let you know how much work it was to install.
